How to Attract and Retain Talent in a Competitive Labor Market

By June 19, 2026No Comments

The labor market in 2026 remains competitive, and organizations face real challenges in attracting and retaining top talent. Employees have more options than ever, turnover is costly, and company culture plays a critical role in retention. The right strategies, from strong employee benefits programs to engaging onboarding and referral initiatives, can turn your organization into a place where great people want to work and stay.

Today’s workforce expects flexibility, meaningful benefits, support for well-being, and purpose driven cultures. In a market where skilled employees have choices, the organizations that listen, adapt, and invest in their people will have the advantage.

When I think about navigating these challenges, I often reflect on Jon Gordon’s children’s book The Coffee Bean. Gordon explains that life can feel like a pot of boiling water. The carrot softens, the egg hardens, and the coffee bean transforms its environment. In the same way, organizations have the ability to transform culture from the inside out and create a workplace that attracts, engages, and retains employees.

Here are some practical steps to consider as part of that transformation.

Survey Your Employees

There is no single approach to benefits that works for everyone. Employee surveys help you understand how your workforce views your programs, where gaps may exist, and what employees value most. Asking for feedback shows employees they matter, which supports retention, satisfaction, and productivity.

Communicate Clearly and Consistently

Trust grows when leadership is open about goals, expectations, and organizational changes. Regular communication helps employees feel informed and valued, and reinforces a positive culture.

Support Employee Well-Being

Employees value work environments that support mental health, balance, and flexibility. Consider resources such as wellness programs, employee assistance programs, flexible schedules, or hybrid work when possible. These efforts help reduce burnout and strengthen retention.

Balance Cost and Offer Competitive Options

Attractive benefits do not always require a large budget. Review your plans and explore solutions that balance cost with employee expectations. Some organizations can make changes quickly, while others take a phased approach. The goal is a benefits package that supports employees while remaining sustainable.

Conduct Annual One-on-One Reviews

Regular check ins are about more than performance. They are an opportunity to talk through benefits and highlight options employees may not fully understand. Life changes quickly, so keeping benefits top of mind helps ensure employees get the most value from what you offer.

Strengthen Onboarding for New Hires

First impressions matter. Engaging new hires before they start and providing structured onboarding helps them understand your culture, benefits, and expectations. Strong onboarding improves engagement, increases confidence, and supports long term retention.

Invest in Career Development

Employees are more likely to stay when they see opportunities to grow. Offer learning programs, leadership development, mentoring, and clear career pathways. When people feel supported in their development, they are more engaged and motivated.

Launch Employee Referral Programs

Your current employees are often your best recruiters. Referral programs encourage them to recommend quality candidates and allow you to reward their efforts. Employees with strong workplace relationships tend to be more engaged, loyal, and productive.

Conduct Exit Interviews to Learn and Improve

Exit interviews can reveal important insight into why employees leave. Use the feedback to identify trends and improve culture, processes, and benefits. Reducing turnover protects time, budget, and institutional knowledge.

My final recommendation is to be a coffee bean. Just as the coffee bean transforms its environment, your organization can transform its workplace from within. Focus on culture, benefits, and engagement, and you will build a team that is motivated, loyal, and ready to grow with you.
