More Than Just a Race

The Boston Marathon is more than a race; it’s a journey of resilience, endurance, and the relentless pursuit of running really fast! Today marks the 129th running of this legendary event, held each year on Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, a day full of history and tradition. As runners take their place at the starting line, they embody the spirit of perseverance, agility, and speed. These qualities aren’t just essential for conquering the course; they’re vital for thriving in today’s fast-moving world. Having experienced the Boston Marathon firsthand, I’ve come to see the race as a real-life lesson in tackling challenges head-on, digging deep, and finding the grit to keep going!

Today’s Business Landscape

This spirit of resilience and speed is mirrored in today’s world of business and innovation. As the saying goes, “It’s not the big fish that eats the small fish, but the fast fish that eats the slow fish.” This simple yet profound truth defines the landscape of our industry. The pace of change has accelerated at an unprecedented rate, reshaping the way we live and work. To keep up, organizations can no longer rely solely on size, strength, or reputation. They must embrace reinvention. Be a fast fish!

Reinvention is not a one-time project. True reinvention is a mindset, a strategy, and a way of operating; it’s a continuous process of growth and adaptation. Walt Disney captured this perfectly when he said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” This same philosophy must apply to businesses today. Organizations must build the capability to continuously reinvent themselves, leveraging technology, data, and creativity to stay ahead.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful example of how technology is driving reinvention. While some view it as a disruptive threat, I see it as an unbelievable opportunity. Gen. AI isn’t just about automating processes or cutting costs. It’s about creating entirely new avenues for growth, innovation, and productivity.

People Power Innovation

But the key to success in this new world isn’t technology alone. It’s PEOPLE. The most advanced tools and systems in the world mean little without the passion and creativity of the people who use them. Organizations that equip their people with the tools, skills, and mindset to thrive will be the ones that lead the pack. We need to focus on enhancing human creativity, not replacing it. If you are reading this and your organization is thriving in this area, I would enjoy the opportunity to discuss further.

The Boston Marathon teaches us that progress is both a marathon and a sprint. Success demands endurance, but it also requires speed, strategy, and the ability to navigate challenges. Just as marathon runners face uphill battles like Heartbreak Hill, organizations encounter their own challenges.  The companies that succeed are those that confront these challenges head-on with an unwavering focus on progress, similar to a marathon build.

In the insurance industry, the path forward is clear. The companies that will thrive in the next decade are those that embrace a strategy of continuous reinvention, while keeping people at the heart of everything they do. I believe insurance agents of the future will have superpowers, a complement of people skills and technology. They will know their customers better than ever, service and support them at key moments, and provide them with a rich digital experience.

Find Your Finish Line

So, as we watch the runners of the 2025 Boston Marathon push themselves to their limits, let’s take inspiration from their journey. Whether on the racecourse or in the boardroom, success belongs not to the biggest or the strongest, but to those who move with purpose, adapt with speed, and never stop striving for better.

Right on Hereford, left on Boylston.

Let’s go!
