A good day on the job for a waste collector starts with a safe truck. While you might be ready to get to work, it’s important not to skip out on pre-trip inspections. They take only a few minutes and are key to safety, compliance, and downtime reduction. Here’s a quick checklist every fleet driver should follow before heading out.
Outside the Truck
- Check all tires: pressure, tread depth, and sidewall damage.
- Confirm headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights are working.
- Look underneath for any visible leaks.
- Check mirrors and windows for cracks, cleanliness, and alignment.
- Ensure hydraulic arms or attachments are secure and stowed properly.
Under the Hood
- Check the oil level.
- Inspect coolant reservoir and hoses.
- Check brake fluid and power steering fluid.
- Inspect belts and wiring for signs of wear.
- Look for any signs of leaks or corrosion.
In the Cab
- Always have a fastened seatbelt and test for wear.
- Test brakes, horn, wipers, defrost, and HVAC.
- Verify reverse camera, telematics devices, and proximity sensors are working.
- Check emergency supplies and documentation (logbook, first aid, fire extinguisher, etc).
Encourage drivers to log all inspections, digitally or on paper, and report any concerns immediately. Daily inspections help catch small problems before they become major failures. They protect drivers, reduce claims, and keep your fleet compliant with state and federal safety regulations.
