Whether you’re rolling through tight alleys or servicing busy commercial routes, your waste management team needs more than just good instincts. They need the right tools in the truck to stay safe, handle minor issues, and be prepared for the unexpected. While comprehensive training and safe vehicles are also key, here are ten must-have items every refuse collection driver and garbage truck operator should keep in their vehicle.

1. Fire Extinguisher

This one’s mandatory and for good reason. Engine fires, electrical sparks, or hydraulic leaks can happen quickly. Keep a regularly inspected extinguisher in the cab and train drivers on how to use it.

2. Reflective Triangles or Road Cones

If a truck breaks down on the road or in a customer lot, visibility is key. Safety triangles and cones warn traffic and create a secure perimeter around the vehicle.

3. PPE Kit (Personal Protective Equipment)

Each vehicle should be stocked with:

  • Reflective safety vests
  • Protective gloves
  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Hard hats

Make sure your drivers and rear load operators are also wearing necessary PPE at all times, including high-visibility clothing, closed-toe boots, and eye and hand protection.

4. Basic Tool Kit

A small toolbox or road safety kit with essentials like a wrench, flashlight, zip ties, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, and duct tape can be a lifesaver for quick fixes or securing loose equipment until it can be serviced.

5. First Aid Kit

A well-stocked kit should cover minor cuts, burns, or eye irritation. Replace used or expired items regularly.

6. GPS & Telematics Devices

This advanced technology enables dispatchers to track locations, monitor safe driving behaviors, and even assist with real-time routing changes. More fleets are using this data to reward safe drivers and optimize efficiency.

7. Spill-Response Kit

A spill-response kit with a bucket, gloves, and more can help you be prepared in the event of a spill involving hydraulic fluid or diesel.

8. Wheel Chocks

Wheel chocks are useful for parking on grades during collection steps. A rolling garbage vehicle can pose serious issues for your employees and your community.

9. Backup Alarms & Cameras

Especially when tested daily prior to your route, backup alarms and cameras may help save you from close calls, near misses, and accidents.

10. Headlamps

In case of early morning or late evening routes during the winter, extra light is a necessity to keep you, your vehicle, and everyone else safe.

Just like drivers carry a license to operate their heavy machinery, trucks need their own license to roll, and that includes being prepared for safety and emergencies. Make sure every truck in your fleet has the gear to back up your safety standards!
