How to Avoid Deer Collisions

Iowa is home to a large deer population. You might see them roaming around in your backyard or, unfortunately, in the middle of the road. Deer-vehicle collisions are a common occurrence in the Midwest. While deer-vehicle collisions are most common in the fall, they can happen at any time of year. It’s important to be vigilant and aware if you are driving during deer season.

Here are some tips to help you avoid deer collisions:

  • Be especially attentive during peak deer hours. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so be extra careful when driving during these times.
  • Use extra caution when driving through deer-crossing zones. Deer-crossing zones are marked with signs, and they indicate areas where deer are known to cross the road. Additionally, be especially cautious when driving through wooded areas and near agricultural fields.
  • Know that deer don’t often run alone. If you see one deer, slow down and expect others to follow.
  • Use high-beam headlights if driving at night when there is no oncoming traffic. High beams will help you see deer sooner, giving you more time to react.
  • Brake firmly and calmly if you see a deer in the road. Do not swerve to avoid hitting the deer. This could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and put others in danger.
  • Keep your windshield clean and free of debris and make sure your windshield wipers are properly working. This will help you to see the road and any obstacles ahead more clearly.

If you are involved in a deer collision, it is important to:

  • Pull over to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights to alert others.
  • Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.
  • If the deer is blocking the road, call the police or highway patrol to report the incident.
  • Do not touch the deer. Deer can carry diseases, and they may be injured or aggressive.
  • Contact your insurance company to file a claim. If you are able, it may be helpful to take pictures of the incident site or your damaged vehicle.

All in all, by following these tips, you can help avoid a deer collision and keep yourself and your passengers safe.
